Abstract

This research is a study that examines the psychological realm of characters in a novel. The purpose of this study is to determine the basic anxiety of the characters which is motivated by the inability to meet existing basic needs. This basic anxiety encourages an individual to make certain responses in Horney's theory. Among them are approaching other people, fighting other people, and staying away from other people. These responses are said to be neurotic responses because of the emergence of responses that are motivated by basic hostility in individuals who are unable to fulfill existing basic needs. The method used is a qualitative method which refers to data in the form of words and sentences. The neurotic responses found in the characters in the novel include: 23 responses to approaching other people, 14 responses against other people, and 14 responses away from other people. Character education from Ki Hajar Dewantara is also found in this novel, namely: 6 religious, 2 nationalist, 2 independent, 2 mutual cooperation, and 14 integrity.
